American 10th seed Danielle Collins will likely be remembered more for her post-match antics than her second-round victory over Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava at Melbourne Park.
The match itself was straightforward enough, but the real drama unfolded after the final point. In a bizarre display, Collins taunted the parochial Melbourne crowd, who had been vocal in their support for the local hopeful. As boos echoed through the arena, Collins doubled downāblowing kisses to the audience before making a gesture that can only be described as ungracious.
"I was thinking during the match, 'if I'm out here I might as well take that big fat pay cheque'. Coco and I, we love a good five-star vacation. So part of that cheque is going to go towards that ā so, thank you, guys."
The display left many cringing. Itās hard not to draw comparisons between Collinsā antics and the sportsmanship of her American compatriot Taylor Fritz, who recently donated his first-round prize money to LA wildfire relief efforts. Meanwhile, Collinsā behaviour resembled that of a petulant schoolyard squabble rather than a seasoned professional.
Australian fans had the last laugh, though. In her next match against fellow American Madison Keys, the Melbourne crowd let their feelings be known with a chorus of boos. Collins bowed out of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat, capping off a campaign that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
